Because of Winn Dixie

I don't normally use this blog to discuss school...I spend enough time there during the week that I like to keep this separate. But I just have to share some amazing work our fifth graders have recently completed.

We have been studying the novel Because of Winn Dixie, and the use of symbols is apparent throughout. As a teacher at Calhoun Academy of the Arts, we integrate the arts into our curriculum as often as possible, so the fifth grade teachers decided we wanted to combine the study of symbols with the art of creating mosaics. It's amazing to see how well the students worked together to complete these complex pieces of art! I am very proud of them, and wanted to share these with everyone!

We also studied conflict and resolution in this unit, and if you are familiar with the story, Gloria Dump has a mistake tree that she hangs bottles from to remind her of all the things she's done wrong in her life. So we studied the art of glass blowing, and then made a Mistake Tree of our own.
